7 Tools for Greenhouse Gardening

By Mark Seibert, Sturdi-Built Greenhouse

Welcome, fellow gardeners, to the world of greenhouse gardening! As any seasoned gardener knows, the journey from seed to harvest is a delicate dance with nature, requiring the right tools, right environment and nurturing care. Inside your greenhouse, where the air is warm, the sunlight abundant and few to no pests are about, the possibilities for cultivating a thriving garden are endless. To move forward with confidence on this botanical adventure, equip yourself with the essential tools tailored for greenhouse gardening of garden starts.

As a seasoned gardener, I've learned through life what the indispensable tools are that make all the difference in nurturing healthy garden starts. Here’s are the seven essential tools every greenhouse gardener should have at their disposal:

  1. Heat Mat: Ah, the warmth of a heat mat is like a gentle embrace for your tender seeds. Warm, moist soil becomes the perfect signal for seeds to begin growing.  Keeping the soil warm in the throughout the early stages of growth is crucial for promoting healthy root development and vigorous growth.  A quality heat mat placed beneath your seed trays provides consistent warmth, mimicking the natural soil warming on sunny spring day. Whether you're germinating seeds or coaxing delicate seedlings to thrive, a reliable heat mat is your ally in creating the ideal growing environment.  A close cousin of heat mats are soil cables – which are perfect to warm soil in grow boxes.  The electric cables emit heat to warm the soil
  2. Grow Lights: While natural sunlight is nature's gift to plants, it can be a fickle companion, especially in regions where winter's embrace lingers longer. Enter the trusty grow light, a beacon of artificial sunshine that ensures your plants receive the nourishing light they crave, regardless of the weather outside. Whether supplementing natural light or providing illumination during those dark winter days, a well-positioned grow light is essential for promoting healthy growth and preventing leggy, etiolated seedlings.  Be sure to select a grow light that provides the areas of the light spectrum that drive photosynthesis: Red (600-700 nm), followed by Blue (400-500 nm) and lastly, the Green (500-600 nm)
  3. Hand Tools for Planting: The joke in a greenhouse gardener’s kitchen goes like this: “If you cannot find your favorite kitchen utensil, it’s in your greenhouse.”  To avoid the truth of life, gather or purchase tools.  Yet, in the world of gardening, there's a special bond between a gardener and their trusty hand tools. From trowels to dibbers, these humble implements are the extension of a gardener's hands, facilitating the delicate work of planting and transplanting with precision and care. In the confined space of a greenhouse, where every inch counts, investing in high-quality hand tools is a wise decision. Choose tools ergonomically designed for comfort and durability, ensuring effortless planting and transplanting as you nurture your garden starts to maturity.
  4. Heater: As the chill of winter lingers and the frosty fingers of Jack Frost threaten to nip at your tender plants, a reliable heater becomes your greenhouse's guardian against the cold. Whether you opt for electric, propane, or natural gas heaters, the key is to maintain a consistent temperature conducive to plant growth.  Most plants grow best in temperatures ranging from 59°–86°F.  A well-regulated climate in your greenhouse ensures that your greenhouse remains a cozy haven for your starts, shielding them from the harsh realities of the outside world and fostering optimal growth year-round.
  5. Circulating Fan: Just as a gentle breeze stirs the leaves of a forest, a circulating fan breathes life into your greenhouse, strengthens your young sprouts, promoting air circulation and preventing stagnant pockets of humidity. Proper air movement is essential for discouraging fungal diseases, strengthening plant stems, and distributing heat evenly throughout your greenhouse. Invest in a quality circulating fan with adjustable settings to tailor airflow to your plants' needs, ensuring a healthy growing environment free from the stifling embrace of humidity and mold.
  1. Trays for Seed Starting: When it comes to starting seeds, organization is key. Enter the humble seed tray, a gardener's best friend in the quest for orderly propagation. Whether you prefer plastic or biodegradable trays, the goal remains the same: to provide a snug, nurturing environment for your seeds to sprout and thrive. Opt for trays with drainage holes to prevent water-logging and choose sizes that fit snugly within your greenhouse space, maximizing efficiency and minimizing waste as you sow the seeds of future harvests
  1. Water Wand for Gentle Watering: Just as a gentle rain nourishes the earth, a water wand delivers a soothing shower to your greenhouse plants, hydrating them with care and precision. Unlike the harsh blast of a hose nozzle, a water wand allows for controlled watering, minimizing soil disturbance and reducing the risk of over watering or soil compaction. Choose a wand with adjustable settings to accommodate the diverse watering needs of your plants, from delicate seedlings to thirsty tomatoes, and let the gentle flow of water nurture your greenhouse garden to fruition.

In conclusion, embarking on the journey of greenhouse gardening is a rewarding endeavor that requires careful planning, nurturing care, and the right tools for the job. By equipping yourself with the seven essential tools outlined above – from heat mats to water wands – you'll be well-prepared to cultivate a thriving garden starts in your greenhouse, fostering a sanctuary of growth and abundance for years to come. So, don your gardening gloves, embrace the rhythm of the seasons, and let your greenhouse garden flourish under your loving care.

Happy gardening!
